Some of Your Questions Answered

HTCI

What is the Initiative?

An organisation formed in 1995 by a group of local landlords and traders who, in view of their concern about the future of Hitchin town centre, met to discuss ideas on how the town could be improved by a co-ordinated effort.

Why does Hitchin need an Initiative?

Hitchin Town Centre needs to respond to changing circumstances in retailing and leisure facilities. There is increased competition between neighbouring towns and particularly from the development of out of town retail and leisure parks. The ability to shop via mail order, the Internet and TV/Radio has had a further impact on the traditional role of the High Street.

It is vital for Hitchin to maintain its competitive edge, attract new customers and ensure repeat visits.

Events Update March 2006:

North Herts District Council has now adopted a Planning Brief for the Churchgate area based on Consultants recommendations after lengthy public discussions. Full details can be obtained from the NHDC website.

It is hoped that a Planning Application will be forthcoming early Summer this year. Businesses in Hitchin are keen to have a swift resolution as this issue has been dragging on for too long now.
